Incursion Options

AG Academy brings the farm to the school via incursion. Students will have opportunity to talk to and ask questions of an agricultural industry professional about their chosen career, such as their daily activities and how they became interested in their field.

Dairy Incursion

This Dairy Incursion covers the production of milk, starting from the feed dairy cows eat, to the eventual milk product.

This incursion highlights:

  1. importance of the South West Region of WA.
  2. WA dairy industry’s highly mechanized approach to production.
  3. WA dairy’s innovative production process given the climatic factors.
Horticulture Incursion

Covering the horticulture industry of WA and the need for bee pollination, this incursion will cover why our fruit and vegetable are important to our state.

The activities included in this incursion will cover the process of fruit and vegetables.

This incursion highlights:

  1. WA grows a variety of fruit and vegetables.
  2. There are a range of horticultural areas in WA.
  3. There are many aspects to think about when running a fruit/veg farm, including pests, diseases and soil health.
  4. The industry is becoming more high-tech with automatic harvesters and predicative analytics for soil and water management.
Apiary Incursion

Apiary is a key WA industry that supports much of the horticultural production. Beekeepers often have to move their hives around to farms which need their bees pollination, fulfilling “contracts”.

Of course, beekeepers also produce honey and wax, which can fetch a high price depending on what type of vegetation they harvest. For example WA produces Jarrah honey, which is thanks to our Jarrah trees in the south west.

*Allergy information will be required from the teaching staff for this incursion.

This incursion highlights:

  1. The process of how bees pollinate other plants.
  2. Bees provides a wide array products as food and can also have medicinal applications.
  3. The apiary industry, although small, is essential to many aspects of horticultural production.
